You never need to buy a can of pie filling again, all you need is this Homemade Apple Pie Filling recipe and it is so much better than any store-bought pie filling.
How to make the perfect apple filling? Well, here are the things you want to keep in mind. First, slice your apples in chunks the way you like it. Homemade is way better than the ones we can buy at the stores because you can adjust the spices according to your liking. If you love cinnamon, then feel free to add more. And you’ll not be confined as to which apples to use. You can use any kind of apples. I like the good old combination of Granny Smith and Fuji but you can use whatever is available. Some people don’t use cornstarch to make their pie filling, but I find it easier to make it with everything that I already have on hand. And don’t worry if the mixture looks loose at first, it’ll thicken as it cools.
Filling Per Quart
1 cup of sugar
1/4 cup corn starch
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 cup water
3/4 cup apple juice or apple cider
2 tablespoon lemon juice
How to make Homemade Apple Pie Filling
Step 1: Place cored, peeled, and sliced apples in boiling water for a minute. Set the apples aside and keep them hot.
Step 2: Boil the sugar, corn starch, cinnamon, nutmeg, water, apple juice or apple cider, and lemon juice until you get your desired consistency. Make sure that the mixture reaches a full boil.
Step 3: Alternately fill with apples then syrup the hot sterilized quart jars until it is almost full.
Step 4: Then, run a knife down the side to get rid of the air bubbles. And add more apples and syrup.
Step 5: Follow the boiling water bath process where you put the jars in a water bath or equivalent which will allow you to put about inch water over the jars. And boil for 25 minutes.
For the Apple Crisp
1 qt apple pie filling
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup oats
1/4 cup butter, melted
To make Apple Crisp
Step 1: In a pan, pour the apple pie filling.
Step 2: Combine the cinnamon, sugar, flour, oats, and melted butter. Mix well before you sprinkling over the filling.
Step 3: Place inside the oven and bake at 375 degrees for about 20 to 30 minutes until golden.
