How to make Moms Apple Pie
Ingredients :
– 2 – 9 – inch pie crusts, unbaked (I use homemade)
– 8 – 10 – granny smith apples, peeled and sliced 1/4 inch thick (for deep dish pie, 8 apples should do for a regular 9-inch pie plate)
– 1 1/2 teaspoon(s) cinnamon
– 1/3 cup(s) flour
– 3/4 cup(s) sugar
– 1/4 cup(s) brown sugar
– 4 tablespoon(s) lemon juice, or to taste
– 2 tablespoon(s) butter
– Milk for top crust (optional)
– Sugar for top crust (optional)
Directions :
1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F.
2. If you’re making homemade crust, prepare it now. If you’re using store-bought, place the bottom crust in the pie plate.
3. Prepare the apples. Peel and slice them about 1/4 inch thick. Put the slices in a medium bowl and add flour, sugars, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Mix well and set aside. (Taste the mixture after it makes some juice.)
4. Let the apples sit for about 15-20 minutes, then stir again and taste. If it’s too sour, add more sugar. The mixture should be somewhat tart.
5. Place the bottom crust in the pie plate, leaving some overhang. Spoon the apples and juice into the crust. Don’t be afraid to heap them in— they will cook down! Top with pieces of butter.
6. Carefully place the other crust on top of the apples. Fold the top crust under the edge of the bottom crust and use a fork or your fingers to pinch them together.
7. Brush the top crust with milk, sprinkle with sugar, and cut several slits to vent.
8. Bake at 400 degrees F. for 15 minutes. Cover the crust with foil to prevent it from browning too much.
9. Be sure to place foil under the pie to catch any juices that may leak out.
10. After 15 minutes, reduce the heat to 350 degrees F. and bake for another 50 to 55 minutes. Use a thin knife to check if the apples are tender.
11. Let the pie cool on a cooling rack.
12. Cover and refrigerate the pie until you’re ready to serve. Store any leftovers in the refrigerator.
How to serve Moms Apple Pie
Serve Mom’s Apple Pie warm or at room temperature. It tastes even better with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top or a dollop of whipped cream.
How to store Moms Apple Pie
To store Mom’s Apple Pie, cover it tightly with plastic wrap or foil and keep it in the refrigerator. It should last for about 3-4 days.
Tips to make Moms Apple Pie
– For a richer flavor, try adding a bit of nutmeg along with the cinnamon.
– Don’t skip the lemon juice; it enhances the apple flavor and balances the sugars.
– Make sure not to skip the vent slits on top of the crust so that steam can escape while baking.
Variation (if any)
You can experiment with different apple varieties or even mix a few types together for a unique flavor. Also, feel free to add nuts for some crunch!
