Ingredients

Pie Crust

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 6 tbsp ice water

Apple Filling

  • 4 Granny Smith apples peeled, cored, and diced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp apple pie spice
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp corn starch

Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Mix flour and salt in a large bowl. Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles gravel. Gradually add ice water and mix until a dough forms.
  • Roll the dough into a disc and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes.
  • Cook diced apples with butter, sugar, and spices until soft. Thicken with a slurry of corn starch and water.
  • Roll out the chilled dough and cut into 5-inch circles.
  • Place a spoonful of apple filling on one side of each dough circle, fold over, and crimp edges with a fork.
  • Fry the pies in oil heated to 375 degrees F until golden. Drain and apply a glaze.
