Crispy chicken pieces coated in a sticky, sweet, and slightly spicy sauce. This Asian Sweet Chili Chicken is super addicting! Easily make this at home and forget about Asian takeout! Serve this with a side of Broccoli, bok choy, or green beans.
Ingredients
Tempura Battered Chicken:
2 tbsp canola oil
1 lb. chicken thighs, boneless-skinless and cut into 1-inch pieces
2 egg whites
1 c. all-purpose flour, sifted
1 c. water ice cold
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 c. cornstarch
Sauce:
3 cloves garlic, minced
canola oil for frying
1 tbsp oil
1/2 tsp crushed red pepper
1/2 c. Thai sweet chili sauce
3 green onions, sliced thinly (tip to tail, but not including the root)
Optional Garnishes:
minced green onions
white sesame seeds
How to make Asian Sweet Chili Chicken
Step 1: In a large bowl, combine the batter ingredients.
Step 2: Add enough oil to a hot frying pan. Deep fry the chicken pieces without them touching. Drain the batter as much as possible using a slotted spoon and slide the chicken into the pan. After the crust begins to form, break the chicken apart and cook for about 4 to 5 minutes until the chicken is golden brown. Make sure to cook the chicken pieces in batches to prevent the temperature of the oil from dropping too far.
Step 3: Once all the chicken is cooked, discard most of the oil, keeping only just a few tbsp in the pan.
Step 4: In the same pan, add the garlic and green onions. Saute for about 20 to 30 seconds over medium heat.
Step 5: Return the chicken to the pan and pour in the sweet chili sauce. Add the crushed red pepper and mix well.
Step 6: Remove from the heat and serve the Asian sweet chili chicken immediately, garnished with some sesame seeds and green onions. Enjoy!
