1/2 c unsalted butter
1 1/4 c light brown sugar, packed
1 loaf thick sliced bread about 2-inches thick, (1.4 pounds or 650 g loaf)
6 large Eggs
2 c milk (full fat or 2%)
2 tbsp pure vanilla extract
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
Icing sugar, to dust
Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, kiwi fruits, pineapple, bananas, or any other fruit to serve.
Step 1: Apply cooking spray in a 9×13-inch baking dish.
Step 2: Place a small pot on the stove and turn the heat to low.
Step 3: Add butter and allow it to melt.
Step 4: Add 1 cup of sugar and stir until well mixed.
Step 5: Transfer the mixture into the greased baking dish and spread it evenly on the bottom.
Step 6: In a small mixing bowl, add the milk, eggs, and vanilla. Beat until well blended.
Step 7: In another mixing bowl, add the rest of the cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar. Whisk until well blended.
Step 8: Add a layer of bread on top of the sugar/butter mixture.
Step 9: Spread 1/2 of the egg wash on top of the bread.
Step 10: Spread 1/2 of the brown sugar/cinnamon on top of the egg wash.
Step 11: Add another layer of the sliced bread on top of the sugar/cinnamon layer.
Step 12: Spread the rest of the egg wash over the bread.
Step 13: Cover the baking dish with aluminium foil.
Step 14: Place it inside the fridge for about 30 minutes to overnight.
Step 15: Remove from the fridge and allow it to sit at room temperature for 20 minutes.
Step 16: Prepare the oven and preheat to 175 degrees C or 350 degrees F.
Step 17: Cover the baking dish and place it inside the preheated oven. Bake for about 30 minutes.
Step 18: Remove the cover and bake for 15 minutes more or until done.
Step 19: Sprinkle the powdered sugar/icing on top.
Step 20: Serve with syrup. Enjoy!
