How to make General Tso’s Chicken
Step 1: In a bowl, place the sauce ingredients. Mix well and set aside.
Step 2: To a large ziplock bag, add the cornstarch, flour, salt, and pepper. Seal the bag and shake well to mix. In another bowl, beat the egg whites.
Step 3: To the egg whites, add the chicken pieces. Toss well to coat. Into the zip lock bag, spoon the coated chicken pieces, letting the excess egg drip back into the bowl. Shake the bag again to evenly coat the chicken in the cornstarch mixture.
Step 4: Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the chicken (in 2 to 3 batches) and cook for about 2 to 3 minutes per side until the coating is golden brown and the chicken is completely cooked. To a plate, transfer the chicken. Do the same for the remaining chicken pieces, setting them aside on a plate.
Step 5: To the pan, add the sauce. Let it simmer until the sauce is warm and thickened. Just before serving, toss in the chicken until well coated in the sauce.
Step 6: Serve General Tso’s Chicken right away with hot-cooked white or brown rice. If desired, garnish with some chopped green onions. Enjoy!
Notes:
To make this a vegetarian dish, use extra firm tofu in place of chicken. Place the tofu in between paper towels, then press the excess moisture by putting some heavy (such as a cast-iron skillet) on top, leaving it for a couple of minutes. Continue to recipe as directed.
If making in the air fryer, preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees. Evenly spread the coated chicken and spray with olive oil. Set to cook for 15 minutes.
To make it in a slow cooker, start by combining the sauce ingredients. Prepare the chicken as directed in the recipe, but cook them for just a minute per side on very high heat to brown the coating and not cook the chicken completely. Using a non-stick cooking spray, grease the slow cooker. Add the chicken to the slow cooker. On top, pour half of the sauce. Set to cook for 2 to 3 hours on low. Then, stir in the rest of the sauce. Before serving, garnish with some chopped green onions.
