Seriously crispy, tender, and the best Honey BBQ Slow Cooker Chicken Wings! It’s mess-free and no-fuss chicken wings coated in a savory, sweet, and spicy bbq sauce.
Ingredients
Dry Rub or Spice Mix:
2 tsp garlic powder
1 tbsp brown sugar
1 tsp ground black pepper
1 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp chili powder
2 tsp seasoned salt
2 tsp onion powder
Honey BBQ Sauce:
1/2 c. honey
1 c. BBQ sauce (I used the original recipe)
3 tbsp apple juice or apple cider
2 tbsp hot sauce (I use Frank’s original)
Chicken Wings:
2 tbsp cornstarch (optional for thickening the sauce)
4 lbs chicken wings, patted dry
How to make Honey BBQ Slow Cooker Chicken Wings
Step 1: Whisk the dry rub ingredients in a small bowl.
Step 2: Using paper towels, pat the wings dry. In the slow cooker, place the chicken wings and sprinkle over the spice mix. Toss well until the wings are evenly coated.
Step 3: Place the barbecue sauce, honey, hot sauce, and juice in a small bowl. Mix well until blended, then pour this on top of the wings. Toss to coat. Put the lid on and set it to cook on high for 2 hours or on low for 3 to 4 hours.
Step 4: To a serving plate or bowl, transfer the chicken wings when done and keep them warm.
How to thicken the Honey BBQ sauce (optional):
After taking the wings out of the slow cooker, make a slurry. Whisk the cornstarch with 2 tbsp water. Stir this into the slow cooker. Into the Honey BBQ sauce, add the cornstarch mixture, and mix well. Cook for additional 10 to 20 minutes on high until the sauce reaches your preferred thickness.
To crisp up the wings:
About 5 to 6 inches below the broiler, set an oven rack. Using aluminum foil, line a baking sheet and put a wire rack on top.
Using cooking spray, grease a wire rack.
On the wire rack, arrange the slow-cooked wings on a single layer, making sure to leave enough room between the wings so they are not touching. Broil for about 2 to 3 minutes or until the wings are golden brown. Using tongs, flip the wings and broil for another 2 to 3 seconds or until the wings are crispy and golden brown. To a serving bowl, transfer the crispy wings.
If desired, place the wings back into the slow cooker and toss to coat well with the sauce. Or place them in a serving bowl and pour some sauce on top. Then, serve with extra sauce on the side.
