This is incredibly simple to make. Super delicious with cabbage, onions, some shredded carrot, bell pepper, and some julienned bell peppers. This Jamaican Steamed Cabbage is packed with Caribbean flavor with a bit of kick.
This Jamaican cabbage is great to pair with just about anything, such as chicken, pork, and even fish. I also love to bring this to potlucks or parties. You are welcome to throw in your favorite veggies and expect the same result as the restaurant. For this recipe, the base is shredded cabbage and carrots along with the other simple ingredients that make this dish so much better! For some kick, do not forget the scotch bonnet pepper. This recipe is far different from the standard steamed cabbage recipe and is a delicious way to use up extra green cabbage.
Ingredients
1 Half Onion Sliced
1 Half Head Cabbage, Sliced
1 Half Red Pepper Julienned
1/2 teaspoon Garlic Powder
1/2 c. Chicken or Vegetable Broth
1 teaspoon Dried Thyme
1/2 c. Shredded Carrot
1/4 teaspoon Black Pepper
1 tablespoon Oil, Coconut, Vegetable, or Avocado oil
1/2 teaspoon Salt or to taste
How to make Jamaican Steamed Cabbage
Step 1: Into quarter-inch slices, cut half the onion. Into thin slices, slice the cabbage. Then, julienne the red pepper.
Step 2: Into a hot pan over medium-high heat, add the oil. Then, add the onion and saute for about 3 minutes. Next, add the shredded cabbage and cook for another 3 minutes. Pour in the chicken broth and toss in the thyme, garlic powder, and black pepper. Stir well.
Step 3: Adjust the heat to medium. Put the lid on and continue to cook for 5 minutes more until the cabbage has wilted.
Step 4: Stir in the red pepper and carrots. Replace the lid and decrease the heat. Simmer for additional 10 to 15 minutes.
Note:
Easily make this vegan-friendly and use vegetable broth in place of chicken.
