This Southern Tea Cakes Recipe (or tea cake cookie recipe) is the BEST! They are perfectly buttery, rich, soft, and delicious. To really appreciate this southern delicacy, you must pair it with some Southern Sweet Tea.
These have the appearance of regular butter cookies (thus the alternative name of “tea cake cookies”), but they taste and feel more like a cake. I think they’re really fantastic. They combine the most desirable qualities of each option.
They have a buttery, creamy, somewhat sweet, and tender texture. Their bottoms are a pale golden brown and just crisp, while the edges are somewhat chewy. And you won’t believe how easy it is to prepare this dessert!
INGREDIENTS
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1/4 tsp baking soda
1 stick unsalted butter at room temperature
1/4 tsp salt
2 tsp vanilla extract
3/4 c. granulated sugar
1 large egg at room temperature
How to make Southern Tea Cake Cookies
Place the flour, salt, baking soda, and nutmeg in a medium bowl. Mix well until combined.
Cream the butter and sugar in a large bowl or stand mixer bowl with an electric mixer on high for about 4 to 5 minutes.
Adjust the speed to low, then add the egg and vanilla. Next, slowly add the flour mixture to the creamed sugar mixture.
Place the dough in the fridge for about 30 minutes.
Prepare the oven. Preheat it to 325 degrees.
Measure out twelve 1 tbsp portions of dough using a small ice cream scoop, melon baller, or two spoons. Then, shape each portion of dough into a ball with your hands.
On a lined or greased baking sheet, place the dough balls 1 1/2 inches apart. Using the bottom of a cup or mug, slightly flatten each cookie.
Place in the preheated oven and bake for about 10 minutes or until the edges of the cookies are just starting to brown.
