Simple and delicious! This Old Fashioned Goulash is a favorite at home. This is loaded with ground beef, tomatoes, and macaroni.
Goulash tastes like spaghetti. Although, the paprika changes the taste a bit. I love the texture of the goulash more because of the noodle-to-meat ratio, plus the shape of the macaroni. I like my goulash thicker, but if you desire it to be more like a soup, just increase the beef broth by a cup or so.
Ingredients
3 large cloves Garlic, pressed or finely minced
2 pounds Lean Ground Beef or Ground Turkey
2 tbsp Olive Oil
1 large Yellow Onion, diced
1 c. Low Sodium Beef Broth (or chicken broth if using ground turkey)
2 – 15-oz. cans of Tomato Sauce
2 – 14.5-oz. cans of Diced Tomatoes with juice, or stewed tomatoes
2 tsp Low Sodium Soy Sauce (or Worcestershire sauce)
1 tsp Black Pepper
2 tsp Seasoned Salt (like Johnny’s®)
2 tsp Italian Seasoning
1 tbsp Paprika
2 c. Uncooked Small Elbow Macaroni
2 large Bay Leaves
How to make Old Fashioned Goulash
Step 1: Into a hot dutch oven or soup pot on medium-high heat, add the oil. Then, add ground beef or turkey. Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring often until browned. Then, spoon off the excess grease.
Step 2: Toss in the diced onion, garlic, and bay leaves. Continue to cook for another 4 minutes, stirring often.
Step 3: Pour in the broth, then add the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, soy sauce, seasoned salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, and paprika. Mix well.
Step 4: Adjust the heat to low. Put the lid on and cook additional 15 minutes, stirring often.
Step 5: Add the macaroni noodles, toss, and put the lid on. Cook for another 15 to 25 minutes or until the pasta is done.
Step 6: Remove the bay leaves and discard them.
Note:
Increase the beef broth by a cup or so if you prefer the goulash more like a soup.
