This recipe is not only easy and quick but very versatile. if you want some kick, you are free to add chili powder. A little kick would not hurt! You can also omit the mushrooms, but I do not recommend skipping them. For a filling meal, serve this Southern Fried Cabbage over rice. I do not mind having leftovers because leftovers are also great!
Ingredients
1 large onion, chopped
1 large head of cabbage, chopped
1 lb bacon
salt and ground black pepper to taste
1 (8 oz.) package of sliced fresh mushrooms
How to make The Best Southern Fried Cabbage
Step 1: In a large skillet, cook the bacon over medium-high heat for about 10 minutes until evenly browned, stirring often. On paper towels, drain the bacon slices. Once cooled, crumble the bacon. Make sure to reserve about 3 tbsp of bacon drippings.
Step 2: In the same skillet with the remaining bacon drippings, cook the cabbage, onion, and mushrooms for about 20 minutes until tender and lightly brown, stirring occasionally.
Step 3: Add the bacon and stir well. To taste, season with salt and black pepper.
Step 4: Take the skillet off the heat when done and serve the Southern Fried Cabbage immediately over rice. Enjoy!
