Ingredients
1/3 c. all-purpose flour
1 lb. breakfast sausage, hot
3 to 4 c. whole milk, more to taste
12 cooked biscuits, warmed, for serving
½ tsp seasoned salt
2 tsp freshly ground black pepper, more to taste
HOW TO MAKE THE PIONEER WOMAN SAUSAGE GRAVY
Step 1: Tear the sausage into small pieces and place them in a skillet in a single layer. Cook the sausage over medium-high heat until brown. Adjust the heat to low-medium and sprinkle half of the flour on top of the sausage. Stir well, then slowly add more flour. Continue to cook for a minute more before adding in the milk. Stir again.
Step 2: Cook the gravy for about 10 to 12 minutes, stirring constantly until the mixture has thickened. Season with salt and pepper and cook further until the gravy is very thick.
Step 3: Spoon the sausage gravy on the warm biscuits and serve right away. Enjoy!
Tips:
1. You can whip up the gravy in advance and keep it in an airtight jar and store it in the fridge.
2. You can also throw the biscuits together ahead of time and just reheat them before serving.
3. To thicken the gravy, swap the flour with cornstarch or arrowroot.
4. A great alternative to milk is heavy cream or skim milk. The gravy will be thinner, but still be delicious if using a non-dairy milk substitute.
