Ingredients
1 lb. breakfast sausage, hot
3 to 4 c. whole milk, more to taste
1/3 c. all-purpose flour
½ tsp seasoned salt
12 cooked biscuits, warmed, for serving
2 tsp freshly ground black pepper, more to taste
HOW TO MAKE THE PIONEER WOMAN SAUSAGE GRAVY
Step 1: Tear small pieces of sausages and place them in a skillet in a single layer. Cook over medium-high heat until brown. Adjust the heat to low-medium and sprinkle half of the flour over the sausage. Stir well until the flour is soaked. Slowly add more. Stir and cook for an additional minute. Then, stir in the milk.
Step 2: Cook the gravy for about 10 to 12 minutes, stirring constantly until thickened. To taste, season with seasoned salt and pepper. Cook further until the mixture is very thick.
Step 3: On the warm biscuits, spoon the sausage gravy. Serve right away. Enjoy!
Tips:
You can whip up the gravy in advance and keep it in an airtight jar in the refrigerator. You can also make the gravy ahead and just reheat it before serving.
If desired, you can swap the flour with cornstarch or arrowroot to thicken the gravy instead.
You can use heavy cream as an alternative to milk. The gravy will be thinner, but still delicious if you use a non-dairy milk substitute.
